On Thursday, 22 January, we came together as a nation to observe the National Day of Mourning. This day was a solemn reminder of lives lost and communities forever changed. It was also a call to action—a moment to reaffirm who we are and what we stand for.
At times like this, our response must be united, compassionate, and resolute. We owe it to those who have lost their lives, and to the survivors who embodied the Upstander values we teach, to ensure that hatred does not define us. Instead, let courage, care, and collective responsibility be the principles that guide us forward.
The theme, “Light Will Win”, speaks to the resilience of the human spirit. Darkness may challenge us, but it will never overcome the strength of communities standing together. For future generations, let this day be a promise: that we will not allow fear or division to shape our world, but will choose hope, solidarity, and action.
As a gesture of support and remembrance, our office staff lit a candle on this day. This simple act symbolizes our shared commitment to healing, unity, and the belief that light will always overcome darkness.
Our volunteers role is vital. They are the light—through their service, empathy, and unwavering commitment to others. Our thanks is to them for being part of this journey toward hope and unity.
