Committee of Management

Our Committee of Management (COM) is a cohesive unit that brings together diverse skills and experience.

Our four functional sub-committees all report to our COM. Each has their own agreed Terms of Reference and members who are experts in their respective subjects. The four sub-committees are:

Education sub-committee: responsible for the integrity of our Upstander Program delivery
Volunteer and survivor sub-committee: responsible for relationships with our volunteers and Survivor Speakers
Marketing and fundraising sub-committee: responsible for raising much-needed funds and raising our profile
Audit and risk sub-committee: responsible for financial and legal governance

In June 2025 we announced the passing of our Chair, Judy Glick. Judy helped guide our organisation through some of its most challenging and transformative years, including COVID-19, and subsequent period during which our impact tripled in size. Judy was instrumental in helping us navigate difficult times following October 7, always leading with calm, compassion, and unwavering commitment.

Sabrina Chakman was named Chair in July 2025 and will continue Judy’s legacy of compassionate leadership while bringing her own unique ideas, voice, and perspective to this vital role.

Sabrina Chakman and Kerryn Lowe lead the group and provide excellent oversight of our strategic direction while also governing all operational activity.

Sabrina Chakman (Chair & Chair Education Subcommittee)
Sabrina was born and raised in Melbourne, the only child of Polish parents who survived the Holocaust by running, hiding and being helped by good people. Sabrina completed a BA (English) at Monash University followed by a Dip Ed. Sabrina taught in the secondary, TAFE and Higher Education sectors before making a career change, completing a Graduate Diploma in Career Education and Development and working as the Senior Careers Educator at Deakin University. Sabrina gives her time to Courage to Care because its values align so closely to those she holds as vital to ensuring a civilised society. The work of Courage to Care gives her the opportunity to work with young people and apply her skills and experience to the important mission of spreading the lessons of the Holocaust and other genocides, as well as addressing serious issues that confront us all today.

Kerryn Lowe (Deputy Chair)
Kerryn studied Arts/Law at Monash University where she was heavily involved with many clubs and was a student representative on a University Board. Most recently she worked for Melbourne Airport as their in-house legal counsel. Kerryn was drawn to Courage to Care because of the promotion of positive values and empowerment of students via the Upstander message and Holocaust experiences.

Simone Markus (Secretary)

Simone has been involved in many volunteering roles for a period of over 40 years. For the past 10 years she has been President and Co-President of Raoul Wallenberg Unit of B’nai B’rith Victoria. Through B’nai B’rith, Simone has been involved in the Raoul Wallenberg Study Grant program for about 18 years, fund raising and co-ordinating donations for the grants, and has had the pleasure of meeting teacher applicants, some of whom have become firm friends. As the daughter of Holocaust survivors. she considers it a privilege to be involved in promoting Holocaust studies. Simone joined the CoM in 2023 following her retirement in 2020 after a long career as a legal secretary and then as a medical audio-typist and receptionist.

Vicki Lustig (Treasurer)
Born and raised in Melbourne, Vicki started her career in banking and corporate finance in a number of roles, and more recently in accounting and bookkeeping. Vicki has volunteered for a number of organisations including Maccabi Australia, the Caulfield Toy Library and various committees related to her children’s’ school. A third-generation member of B’nai B’rith, she is also an alumnus of B’nai B’rith Youth, and was drawn to Courage to Care because of her passion to address racism and discrimination in the community.

Harry Better OAM FIE Aust
Harry was born in Poland and spent the war years in ghettos and hidden by a Polish family. He lost his mother and a sister in the Holocaust. He arrived in Australia in 1946. He completed a Fellowship Diploma in engineering at RMIT, a Masters at University of Manchester, and has more than 50 years’ experience as a Forensic Engineer. Harry has been active in the Jewish community including North Eastern Jewish War Memorial Centre, B’nai B’rith Wallenberg Unit, and Courage to Care since its inception. Harry cares deeply about Courage to Care and participates in its activities as a survivor speaker and committee member.

Lani Brayer
Lani was born and raised in Melbourne and spent time in Israel before returning to Australia to complete a B.A in History and Language and, ultimately, an MA in Education, specialising in LOTE. Lani left full time teaching after 30 years, turning her hand to developing and presenting educational programs for Courage to Care, Gen2Gen and the Anti-Defamation Commission. She joined the COM in 2018 because she strongly believes in teaching young people about the dangers of prejudice and discrimination and what it can lead to if left unchecked. Lani relishes the opportunity to change negative attitudes through the experiential opportunity that Courage to Care offers.

Sam Rotberg

Sam was born in Melbourne and attended Mount Scopus Memorial College from Grade 2 to the end of my Secondary years and then went onto what was called CIT ( Now Monash University ) and studied Bachelor of Business majoring in Accounting. Sam’s professional career was at two firms, the second of which he started as a junior Accountant and worked up to Partner, helped grow the firm and then retired after 39 years. Sam feels its now his turn to give back and one way of doing that is joining Courage to Care – initially as a member of the Audit Review Committee, then the Remuneration Committee and now be on the Committee of Management.

Susan Hearst
Susan was born in Sydney and moved to Melbourne as a young child. She graduated with a BA (honours) from the University of Melbourne in 1969 and then worked in London before returning to Australia to complete a Social Work degree and a Masters in Social Work from La Trobe University. With her husband Gary, Susan was Joint Managing Director of Tempo Holidays for eighteen years. Susan was a Member of the Board of Emmy Monash Aged Care for five years and worked with Courage to Care as a facilitator and Custodian Speaker before joining the COM in 2018. Susan is passionate about telling her mother’s story of how the Japanese Consul, in Lithuania, Chiune Sugihara, saved her family from almost certain death.

David Klein
David is grandchild to 4 Viennese refugees who managed to escape the Holocaust. He has worked as an engineer and then as a Project Manager for most of his career starting his own business in 2011. David first became involved with B’nai B’rith as a teenager, and after a gap of more than 25 years became involved again through Courage to Care. David is passionate about giving back to the community.

Kay Ronec
Kay was born in Poland to parents who were holocaust survivors. After migrating to Melbourne in 1962, Kay had a varied career firstly in hospitality and then in the fashion industry. After Kay’s late husband Joe, a Holocaust survivor, passed away suddenly she retired and devoted herself to making young people in the community understand what can be the consequences of racism and discrimination, and the importance of being tolerant of the “other”. Since joining Courage to Care Kay has been a passionate facilitator and committee member.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS

PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING CAREFULLY.

Entrants must be permanent residents of Victoria with a valid residential address, email address, and phone number.

There is no cost to enter.

There are two categories of Entries:

Victorian School Students Competition – which is open to any currently enrolled student in a Victorian Primary or Secondary School (including VCAL or equivalent); and
Open Competition – which is open to all Victorian residents of any age.

Each Entrant may enter only one photograph.

By entering this Competition, you confirm that:

you are the creator and owner of the entered photograph;
you grant Courage to Care (Vic) (“C2C”) at no charge, a perpetual, non-exclusive licence to use, sell and reproduce your photograph in print and digital media, for use in and promotion:
- of C2C’s 30^th Birthday Exhibition; and
- by C2C for any purpose.
the exhibition and promotion of your photograph does not infringe copyright or moral rights; and
you have obtained all relevant permissions of persons shown in photograph.

Your entry for this Competition must include:
A digital image file in jpeg format with a file size of at least 4 MB and no greater than 10 MB
A title for your photograph; and
A written explanation in no more than 50 words that explains why your photograph is relevant to the theme of “Being an Upstander.” For Further information on this theme, refer to couragetocare.org.au
Digital manipulation and alternative post-capture image processing methods of photographs are permitted.

No entries will be accepted after 11:59 pm on 31 March 2022
C2C will acknowledge receipt of all entries. If you do not receive an acknowledgment within fourteen days, please contact C2C competition@couragetocare.org.au.
Entries will not be accepted or judged if:

under normally accepted standards, the photograph could be considered offensive in terms of pornographic content, character denigration, racial or religious prejudice. The Judge’s decision and discretion will be final; or

The Judges will decide and notify the finalists and also the Competition winners. The Judges’ decision is final and no correspondence concerning the Judges’ decision will be considered.

All finalist photographs will be exhibited at the C2C 30^th Birthday Exhibition and will remain for the duration of this period.
C2C reserves the right to curate the exhibition as it sees fit. C2C will determine whether the photograph will be displayed digitally or as a printed photograph. The costs of printing and display of the photographs will be paid by C2C.
The Competition winners will be announced during the C2C 30^th Anniversary Exhibition.
For the duration of the Exhibition, all Photographs must be available for sale. All proceeds of sales will go to C2C as a fundraising initiative to support their charitable purpose.

Photographs will be sold via a “silent auction”. All photographs will be delivered to the purchaser as a printed photograph at C2C’s expense.

C2C will not be responsible for any loss or damage of the submitted digital image files or printed photographs, however caused.
Please note that this Exhibition is separate from the annual Art Show run by B’nai B’rith Victoria.
