Our Volunteers
Behind every Upstander Program delivered and every student inspired are the amazing volunteers who make it all possible.
The People Who Make It Happen
Our volunteers are the heart of Courage to Care NSW.
Without their passion and dedication, the work we do simply wouldn’t be possible.
They are the driving force behind our Upstander Programs — taking our mission off the page and into classrooms and communities right across NSW, QLD and ACT.
Every year, it is their commitment that allows thousands of students to gain a deeper understanding of the Holocaust, discover the stories of remarkable Upstanders, and learn how those lessons can be applied to their own everyday lives and communities.
Many of our volunteers share a profound personal connection to the stories we tell. Others bring professional skills, lived experience, and a deep commitment to the importance of standing up against prejudice. Together, they create the warmth, professionalism, and impact that define our programs.
How Our Volunteers Make A Difference
Delivering Upstander Programs
At the heart of our impact are the Program Facilitators — volunteers who bring each Upstander Program to life by guiding participants through stories of the Holocaust and of remarkable Upstanders who chose courage over indifference.
As facilitators, they don’t just present information — they create space for dialogue by leading discussions, encouraging reflection, and guiding group activities that help students connect historical lessons and the testimony of Holocaust Survivors to the present day.
In doing so, our volunteers transform the message of Upstanding from an idea into a lived possibility for every student they meet.
Regional Support
Not every volunteer role is front-facing — many also contribute behind the scenes to keep our programs running smoothly.
As our work continues to expand into regional locations, volunteers make it possible for us to reach communities beyond greater Sydney by stepping into essential roles such as driving Program Facilitators and Holocaust Survivors to schools and venues and providing general program support.
This ensures our programs remain accessible and impactful — helping bring our Upstander Programs to schools and communities that might otherwise miss out.
Supporting Holocaust Survivors
Our volunteers play a vital role in supporting the Holocaust Survivors who generously share their testimonies at our programs.
They accompany Survivors to the schools and communities we visit, provide support and practical assistance throughout the day, and ensuring each story is shared with dignity and care.
In doing so, volunteers help create meaningful encounters that leave a lasting impression on students and communities alike.
