Over the past 25 years, we've proudly delivered more than 70 exhibitions - bringing history to life as Upstander education.
More Than A History Lesson
Since 1999, our traveling exhibition has brought Courage to Care into regional communities right across NSW — turning local venues into places where history meets action.
Each exhibition is delivered as a partnership: we work with the host space (gallery, museum, library or civic venue) along with local council, schools and community groups to plan and promote a multi-week program.
While the exhibition is in town, we run our Upstander Programs onsite — structured sessions for Years 5–12 and tailored workshops for community groups and organisations — so the whole community can engage, reflect and act.
Grounded in the tragic history of the Holocaust, yet centred on inspirational stories of Upstander, the exhibition is not just a history lesson. Instead, it invites visitors to consider what it means to be an Upstander today — and how we can build more compassionate communities together.
What's In the Exhibition?
The Courage to Care exhibition is an immersive experience designed to educate, move, and inspire.
Through powerful storytelling, rare historical artefacts and evocative audiovisual media, our exhibition brings to life remarkable acts of Upstanding and deeply moving stories of rescue and survival.
Visitors encounter the history of the Holocaust and the devastating impact of discrimination before moving through a sequence of curated displays that speak to the extraordinary human capacity for compassion and resilience in the face of injustice and adversity.
Many are familiar with Oskar Schindler, the German industrialist and Upstander depicted in Schindler’s List (1993) — but what about Indigenous Australian activist William Cooper, British humanitarian Sir Nicholas Winton, or pioneering art therapist Friedl Dicker-Brandeis?
Most know of the staggering loss of life caused by the Holocaust. Fewer know about the 100,000 people alive today thanks to the actions of a Japanese diplomat – or the Danish resistance effort that ferried almost all of Denmark’s Jewish population to safety by boat.
By shining a light on these remarkable stories and the enduring legacy of the people within them, our exhibition draws a line between past and present — inviting us to reflect on how each of us can make a positive difference in our communities.

Exhibition Upstander Program
During each Courage to Care exhibition, we partner with local schools, councils, and community groups to deliver our Upstander Programs onsite. These free, immersive sessions are a powerful way for to engage with the stories and themes of the exhibition, and include the opportunity to hear a Holocaust Survivor’s testimony in person.
Designed primarily for local students and typically offered twice daily – from 9:30am to 11:30am and 12:30pm to 2:30pm – we also offer tailored programs for local community groups, clubs, and workplaces seeking to foster inclusion, empathy, and Upstander behaviour in their organisations.
WHAT STUDENTS AND PARTICIPANTS EXPERIENCE:
A brief documentary
A short film introduces students to the historical context of the Holocaust, illustrating the devastating consequences of unchecked prejudice, racism and discrimination. It sets the tone for the powerful stories and reflections that follow.
Guided exhibition tour
Students take a guided look at the powerful stories and actions of Upstanders featured in the exhibition. These inspiring examples serve as a platform to explore the idea that everyone can make a difference through everyday choices.
A Survivor’s testimony
Students hear directly from a Holocaust Survivor who shares their personal story of rescue. These powerful first-hand accounts offer a rare and moving insight into what it truly means to act with compassion, courage and moral strength.
Interactive workshop
Facilitated discussions invite students to reflect on their own experiences and attitudes around bystander behaviour. With practical tools and strategies, they learn how to take safe, positive action in their own lives and communities.
