Statement from the chairman on the shootings at Tree of Life Synagogue Pittsburgh

The shooting at the Tree of Life Synagogue Pittsburgh on Saturday 27 October has shocked and outraged us all. Courage to Care Victoria joins with all sensible people to condemn such actions. How can we accept that a “hate crime” still occurs in modern society and that nothing changes?

As the global discussion shifts to what can be done to prevent future violence, we firmly believe that education on the dangers of racism, discrimination and prejudice is a significant part of the solution.

As an initiative of B’nai B’rith, a global Jewish service organisation, we are all too familiar with such hatred-fueled violence, and we are dedicated to doing something about it. Educating Australians and empowering them to step up and speak out against this kind of hate is our mission.

As Edmund Burke is quoted as saying, “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good people to do nothing.”

It’s time for good people to do something.
